I have a few clients running private clouds on VMware vSphere suite and it is fantastic software. It's a really mature codebase and there are some exceptional features in version 5.1, the only downside being it's not particularly cheap You can also link your private cloud to a service provider and use their resources in a seamless fashion if you need extra capacity.
